Gambella
The Baro River Frontier
A Gateway of Steam and Water
On the banks of the mighty **Baro River**, Gambella sits at a steamy 530 meters above sea level. Once a vibrant inland port where steamships connected the Ethiopian highlands to Khartoum, it remains a unique, low-altitude frontier rich in history and biodiversity.
The Peoples of the Baro
The **Nuer** and **Anuak** people are the heart of the region. Distinguished by their tall stature and Nilotic heritage, they offer a cultural experience distinct from the Ethiopian highlands.
The Anuak
Traditional farmers and skilled fishermen who have mastered life along the riverbanks for generations.
The Nuer
Historically pastoralists moving across the borders of Ethiopia and South Sudan with their livestock.
Gambella National Park
A destination for the truly adventurous traveler. Despite the challenges of its remote location, the park remains one of the few places in Ethiopia to see rare, cross-border species.
