The 5 Gates of Jugol

Built in the 1500s to protect the city, the wall remains the heart of Harar's identity. Within these walls, you will find 10th-century mosques and traditional Harari townhouses famous for their exceptional, colorful interior decor.

The Hyena Man of Harar

As dusk falls, one of Harar's most spectacular traditions begins just outside the city walls. In a display of incredible bravery, the "Hyena Man" hand-feeds wild spotted hyenas—sometimes even mouth-to-mouth. Visitors are invited to observe, and for the truly adventurous, participate in this ancient, mystical ritual.

Every evening at dusk, just outside the city gates.
