Health & Medical Advice

While Ethiopia’s high altitude keeps many areas free of tropical diseases, standard travel health precautions are essential for a comfortable journey.

Vaccinations

Cholera vaccination is required if you visited an infected area 6 days prior to arrival. Yellow Fever is no longer mandatory but highly recommended if arriving from an endemic country.

Malaria Precautions

Absent in high-altitude areas like Addis Ababa, Gondar, and Lalibela. However, precautions are needed for the Omo Valley, Rift Valley, and Awash Valley.

Recommended First Aid Kit

  • Plasters & bandages (various sizes)
  • Antiseptic and anti-histamine creams
  • Painkillers & anti-diarrhea tablets
  • High-factor protection sunscreen
  • DEET-based insect repellent
  • Personal prescription medicines

Safety & Security

Ethiopia is a relatively safe country where violent crime is rare. However, petty theft can occur in urban centers.

Petty Theft: Be alert for pickpockets in crowded markets or bus stands. Watch for "distraction" techniques, such as someone dropping coins or accidentally spitting on you.
Security Checks: Security at airports and public buildings is tight. Expect body scans and bag inspections—this is a normal part of daily life here.
